PETRA: THE LEGACY OF THE NABATEANS Saturday, May 13, 2000 12:11 a.m. It is very late in the evening, especially considering Rich and I awoke early this morning to maximize our time in Petra, the Rose Red City. Petra was established more than 2000 years ago by the Arab Nabateans who recognized the opportunity to control the trade routes that passed through. It is very apparent from the first sight of Al Khazneh, the Treasury Building, and the other massive architectural monuments and water channels that the Nabateans were very successful with this business. Rich and I had a wonderful time today as we explored the tombs and caves, climbed up rock faces to get good views and just looked around us at the sites and people. The only downfall of the day is that Rich accidentally dropped the camera. It is broken again. However, we are both taking it a lot better this time, as we realize that it is a small set back in the large scheme of things. Additionally, there are many solutions to this problem. We figure by this time next week, we will be clicking away on another Cool Pix 950 and sending back this one to be repaired. Until then, it's one of those disposable jobbies. Tomorrow, More Petra.
After another exciting day in the intriguing lost city of Petra, we took a short side trip to Amman, the capital of Jordan and then traveled to Israel. |
