Our time in Athens was short as we were excited to get to the Islands.  So with our first, and only, full day spent at the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis, the next day we had a half day of sightseeing before heading to the port to catch a ferry to the island of Naxos.

Our morning began with some colorful pageantry: the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  It was a rather regal affair, as Greece's finest, lead by a band, marched their way to the Tomb.  Adorned with wooden shoes, tights, and kilts, they don't look like your ordinary troops--but at least they were carrying rifles.

From the Changing of the Guard, we slowly made our way to the Panathenaic Stadium.  Originally built around 330 BC, the stadium hosted the first Olympic Games of the modern era in 1896.  Time will tell what role this classic venue will play--with its marble seating for upwards of 50,000--in the Summer Olympics of 2004, which are to be held here in Athens.

While most fans quietly enjoy the sporting contests at the stadium (like the restrained gentleman on the left) some are a little overzealous in their fanatic support of their team (notice the crazed fan on the right).

Lou and Kelly in are sweet Athens condo.  Plush and elegant accomodations (and as importantly, free), the condo (with food and drink in the fridge, no less) were courtesy of Lou's extended family.  The inhabitants were spending their summer, as they do each year, at their home on the coast--leaving the place to us.  Very nice!

Continue with us to the Greek Islands.
Our first Island destination was Naxos.
