Return 2 Bangkok
Up

After a wonderful time in Vietnam, we had the pleasure of stopping through Bangkok on our way to India.  We were now approximately five months into our trip, so we decided we would really take a vacation from our vacation and stay at the luxurious Peninsula Hotel.  The Peninsula in Bangkok currently has a special Year 2000 rate, allowing us to live in decadence for three days without feeling guilty.   While in Bangkok, we discovered that Kristina Johnson from another travel web site ( www.wired2theworld.com ) which we have followed and enjoyed was also in the city.  We gave her a call, and she and her mother met us at the hotel and had lunch at a local meeting place across the river.  It was great to meet Kristina in person and talk about her big trip around the world and life after trip.

While we did spend a lot of time at the Peninsula, it was productive.  Our Dell lap top computer had died while we were in Hanoi, and we were thinking that we were out of luck.  However, we did ask for the international service warrantee when we purchased the computer, and they came through for us in very short notice while we were in Bangkok.  We have always been impressed with the quality of our computer and Dell's service back in the United States, and now they have even proven themselves internationally.  We also updated our web site, sun bathed at the pool, and Kelly got her hair cut.

Our last day in Bangkok, we ventured back out into the city and visited the Grand Palace of Thailand.  It was very impressive.  At the end of the day, it was time to say goodbye to Bangkok and the country of Thailand.  We will definitely return some day, probably sooner than later.

Rich and I were picked up from the airport by a chauffer dressed in white in a new Mercedes with plush leather seats and whisked away to the Peninsula Hotel.  We almost wept as we entered our stylish, yet classic room.  Here Rich sits on a real couch.

We could have just stayed in our bathroom.  The toilet had its own separate room and a telephone, and the bathtub had its own television.

We spent an afternoon at the Peninsula pool.  Here, Rich enjoys the hot tub, while one of the pool men prepares a towel for him.

Even the pool has a fantastic view of the river and Bangkok skyline.

One of our excursions during our second trip to Bangkok was the Grand Palace.  We were very impressed with the lavish and colorful temples and palaces.  In this photo, warrior figurines help to carry the weight of a temple.

The famous Emerald Buddha is actually made of jasper and is one of the most revered Buddha images of Thailand.   He has different outfits for each season.  Many come to make offerings to this Buddha.  Photographs are strictly prohibited inside of the temple, so Rich took this photograph from outside.  Pretty sly.

Although we were very happy to visit Bangkok again, we were on a mission to discover India and meet our friends Paul and Mike.  And so, after a wonderful afternoon at the Grand Palace, we boarded our plane for India.

Continue with us as we make our passage through India.
