Angkor Wat Page 2

The Ta Prohm was constructed during the 12th century to worship Buddha.  This temple has been purposefully left alone to look the same as it did when it was discovered during the late 19th century, and is therefore still held captive by the surrounding jungle.  Giant trees and their roots have covered and uprooted many parts of the temple.  Some areas have been roped off, as they are in danger of collapsing.  Here, Kelly has been lifted up several feet by Bo so that she can enjoy a view of the temple at a higher level atop of the massive roots of this old tree.

Bo and Rich take their chances as they stand beneath a doorway that has been enveloped by the roots of this gigantic tree.

Angkor Wat is filled with many enterprising Cambodian children who pedal everything from Cokes, to hats, to bracelets, to scarves, to flutes.

Our guide, Nara, saved the spectacular temple of Angkor Wat for last and for good reason.  We have visited many ancient temples and cities during our travels, and none of them come close to matching the massive and beautiful architecture and intricate stone work of Angkor Wat.  Built during the 12th century by King Suryavarman II, this beautiful temple is made up of three levels and topped with many beautiful towers.  The walls of the bottom level of the central temple are covered with intricate carvings which reach 800 meters in length.  The carvings, including the famous "Churning of the Ocean of Milk",  tell stories of ancient Hindu gods.
