More Masai Creatures Bright and Beautiful, More Masai Creatures Great and Small:

The fascinating Zebra (Punda Milia) can be identified by the black and white stripes.  The stripes are like fingerprints so each zebra has his own set of stripes.  These stripes actually have a function as well.  The black heats them up in the sun while the white cools them down, thereby controlling their body temperature, no matter what the weather.  The zebra and the wildebeest are great friends and the zebra also migrates south to the Serengeti during this time of year.

The laughing spotted Hyena (Fisi) is both a scavenger and a predator.  While they are primarily nocturnal, they will eat at any time of the day.  The hyena usually travels in small packs.  We saw a group gathering near a lion and his zebra snack.  While they appeared to be considering a way to retrieve this snack, they eventually chickened out and retreated.  We were disappointed, as we looked forward to seeing a good fight.

The warthog made his world debut in The Lion King when he shared the theory of hakuna matata (no worries) with Simba, the lion.  In real life, the warthog is just as adorable as his cartoon counterpart.  We enjoyed watching the warthog families run all over the Masai Mara savannah.  On the right we see the warthog enjoying grass in the foreground with zebras and wildebeests.
